Why Self-Care is No Longer Optional: Prioritizing Your Somatic Nervous System in Challenging Times

Writer: Stacey MaddenStacey Madden

In today's world, self-care isn't merely an indulgence; it's an absolute necessity. Amid growing stress and uncertainty, tending to our nervous systems through trauma-informed mindfulness and movement becomes an essential practice, not just a choice.

Recent research highlights that mindfulness and somatic movement significantly impact emotional regulation and embodied presence. Mindfulness meditation has been scientifically proven to reduce stress hormones, enhance emotional resilience, and foster a profound sense of calm (Goyal et al., 2014). Similarly, trauma-informed somatic practices actively support the nervous system's ability to reorganize itself, promoting healing from chronic stress and trauma by restoring balance and enhancing self-awareness (Van der Kolk, 2014).

Engaging regularly in these embodied practices helps to shift the nervous system from a state of heightened alertness into a calmer, more regulated space. This shift is crucial for emotional regulation, allowing us to respond thoughtfully rather than reactively to life's challenges.

Gentle Somatic Practices to Try:

1. Grounding Touch: Place one hand gently on your heart and the other on your belly. Close your eyes and breathe slowly, feeling the rise and fall of your chest and abdomen. Notice the calming sensation that arises as your body recognizes the supportive presence of your hands.

2. Softening Movement: Sit comfortably and gently roll your shoulders backward in slow, mindful circles. Allow your breath to guide the movement, noticing how tension begins to release with each rotation.
